Earlier this year Toyota purchased stock in Tesla for shared electric car technology. So it should come as no surprise that the New York Times is reporting that we will see an electric iQ as early as 2010. For 2008-2009 Japan Car of the Year, the 29th running of the competition, 41 vehicles were nominated from the list of new models with the start of sales in Japan between 1 November 2007 and 31 October 2008. The 65 jurors voted on 10 November following a test drive session to choose the winner.

Jury Comment:
The Toyota iQ has a lot of “world’s firsts” in limit design to its credit, but this is not development based on innovative technology, but a high-density design based on existing technology. The Toyota iQ proposes a new possibility to downsizing of cars with its new, ultra-compact, premium 4-seat automobile design transcending the conventional concept of small cars. There is no doubt that its smooth ride and safety features present a whole set of new ideas to the world’s compact cars. It will most likely introduce new concepts to our ideas for handling urban transportation, with its over-abundance of cars.
