National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given the Scion iQ a 4 star front crash test rating out of 5 possible. The iQ earned 3 stars for the side impact test earning it a 4 star overall rating. The Fiat 500 scored 2 stars in the side impact test and a 3 star overall rating.

CR on The Back Seat - “not likely to be popular even with small passengers.” (My thoughts - The back seat is small, but serviceable if needed, not intended for daily use IMO)

CR on The Front Seat - “plenty of room for two six-footers to sit up front without rubbing elbows, and ample leg, foot, and head room.” (My thoughts - The front seat space for adults is amazing, better than many large vehicles)

CR on Driving - “Acceleration is slow from the four-cylinder engine and CVT automatic, and the iQ is noisy enough to make it difficult to hear yourself think no matter your IQ.” (My thoughts - I have owned a Chevy Metro and a Ford Focus… the iQ interior noise and acceleration falls in between)

CR on Turning/Parking - “the tiny turning circle and small footprint make the iQ a snap to park, something city dwellers will appreciate.” (My thoughts - Amazing parking lot skills and really fun to drive!)

Interior Shots I Took Over The Weekend

I took some interior shots of panels and controls this weekend. I was hoping to show more detail of the finishes and textures that the iQ is loaded with. The iQ designers have gone to great length to make the interior unique and attractive without being goofy. Nothing really stood out as awkward or strikingly new, the controls themselves are very straightforward and easy to reach and operate.

Toyota voluntary recall of iQ in the UK

Toyota GB today announced it would recall a number of its iQ models in the UK to carry out a modification to the software used to manage the vehicle’s Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

It is working with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to contact registered owners and keepers by letter to advise them of the procedure for taking their vehicle to an authorised Toyota repairer for the necessary repair work to be done.

The issue affects certain iQ vehicles, produced between 11 September 2008 and 22 October 2010. When driving on certain roadside safety side strips or ‘rumble strips’, signals received by the EPS sensors may be incorrectly interpreted by the EPS control unit, triggering the EPS warning light. Should this happen, the driver would need to apply extra effort to steer the vehicle.

This issue has only been observed in very specific circumstances in Japan. No cases have been reported in Europe. No accidents related to this issue have been reported.

The repair involves the update or replacement of the EPS control unit software. The job will take approximately two hours to complete, at no cost to the customer. Approximately 12,000 UK registered vehicles are affected by this recall.

Toyota will ensure that vehicles produced before 22 October 2010, but not yet delivered to customers, will be checked and the necessary repair undertaken before delivery.

Jon Williams, Managing Director of Toyota GB PLC, said, “We are committed to putting the customer first and have a total focus on the quality of all our products. We will liaise with our customers to carry out the repair procedures as efficiently as possible, with minimal disruption.”

Toyota iQ in Japan Gets Smarter?

The Japanese version of the iQ is sold under the Toyota brand and has been available in Japan and Europe for some time now. With a new version dubbed the 130g to be released soon Toyota is making some changes. The new 130g will be more like the Scion branded iQ we will see in the US. Here are few new photos showing the changes that they have made to the current Toyota model. We are sure to get a more refined vehicle that has a had a few years to work out the kinks. I expect plush interiors to be available and of course an edgier more “Scion” like feel.
